1969

The Hong Kong & Whampoa Dock Company's Hunghom Dock converts a variety of ships into container vessels, most notably for Orient Overseas Container Line.


Facilities at Hunghom are extended with a 180 metre berth and 9,000 square metres of yard for handling container ships and cargo which operates under the name Whampoa Terminals Limited.


HIT is established to co-ordinate container operations at Hung Hom, Kwun Tong and North Point.

1966

The Hong Kong government acknowledges the need to develop dedicated container handling facilities and earmarks the Kwai Chung area for the development of Hong Kong’s first large-scale container port.
