Shanghai Mingdong Container Terminals Celebrates Official Opening

[19 December 2005 – Hong Kong] – Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) is pleased to announce the official opening today of Shanghai Mingdong Container Terminals Limited (SMCT) at Waigaoqiao Phase V (WGQ Phase V) in Shanghai.

SMCT is a 50-50 joint venture between Shanghai International Port (Group) Company Limited (SIPG) and Hutchison Ports Waigaoqiao Limited, a subsidiary of the HPH Group. SMCT has a registered capital of RMB 4 billion, and will operate four deepwater container berths. The joint venture is approved for 50 years.

SMCT is located at the Yangtze estuary near Wu Hao Gou (¤­¸¹·¾), approximately 50 nautical miles from Yangtze anchorage and 110 nautical miles from Yangshan Deep-water Port, providing the shortest navigation channel for ocean-going vessels. SMCT is connected with excellent road infrastructure which allows easy access to and from the terminals.

SMCT has the following facilities:
Total Area: 1.63 million square metres
Container Berths: 4 deepwater berths (1,110 metres)
Super Post-Panamax Quay Cranes: 12 (one of them has a 40′ twin-lift spreader, capable of lifting 80 tonnes; SMCT is the first in China using this kind of equipment)
Barge Berths: 2 feeder berths (190 metres)
Specialised quay cranes for barge: 2
RTGC: 48 (two of which have a lifting capability of 60 tonnes)
Stacking Capacity: 24,649 TEU
Other: Facilities for reefer plugs, dangerous goods and container freight station (CFS)

The opening ceremony was attended by Yang Xiong, Vice Mayor of Shanghai, Lu Haihu, Chairman of the Board, Shanghai International Port (Group) Company Limited, Li Ka-shing, Chairman of Hutchison Whampoa Limited, Canning Fok, Group Managing Director of Hutchison Whampoa Limited, James Tsien, Managing Director of Hutchison Ports China Limited, and officials from the Shanghai Municipal Government.
