The Port of Felixstowe is celebrating a record number of containers transported by rail in November and December 2003, with volumes being broken three times in only a few weeks.
Freeport Container Port (FCP) is pleased to announce the completion of additional dredging in the entrance channel and turning basin to a depth of 16 metres.
The milestone in throughput was achieved as a container was discharged from the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) vessel Arizona.
The celebration took the form of a traditional ‘Gosa’ ceremony, a good-luck ceremony for safe and prosperous use of the new equipment.
The two millionth container was loaded onto COSCO’s vessel M.V. “Chuan He” at Xiamen International Container Terminals (XICT) and the Port Authority organized a ceremony to celebrate the historical occasion.
This delivery is subsequent to Typhoon Maemi which hit Busan Port in September destroying two of HKT’s quay cranes.
The reconfiguration, which was first announced in December 2002, will involve the creation of a new, deep-water container terminal on the site of the existing Dock Basin, the ex-P&O North Sea Ferries terminal and the Port’s Landguard Terminal.
Today, the first batch of “smart and secure” containers entered Yantian International Container Terminals (YICT) after having passed inspection procedures.
The work to resurface the 27,000 square metre North Park commenced on 16th June 2003, and was completed on 5th August.
The Port of Felixstowe is celebrating the launch of new rail services by Freightliner Limited and GB Railfreight from its North Rail Terminal.
