JICT Boosts Operations with New Equipment

29-Jan-2004

To further enhance operations, Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT) launched six new Rubber-Tyred Gantry Cranes (RTGCs) and 13 terminal tractors. The brand new RTGCs were assembled at JICT and are now being commissioned. The new terminal tractors arrived in late November 2003 from Johor Bahru, under licence from Terberg, and have now started operations. With a total yard area of 46 hectares at JICT Terminal 1, this injection of new equipment will ensure faster turnaround times to and from the yard and quay.

Since 1999, JICT has invested heavily in equipment and infrastructure development, in order to provide world-class service to a growing number of direct calls. Prior to the arrival of the new equipment, JICT took delivery of seven post-Panamax quay cranes, 16 RTGCs, 33 terminal tractors and 100 chassis. JICT has also finished the construction of additional deepwater quay, adding two berths to the terminal. In addition, JICT has implemented a fully automated container terminal management system, which has resulted in faster handling times at the terminal.

President Director of JICT, WS Wirjawan commented, “As part of the national distribution network of Indonesia, it has always been JICT’s objective to provide optimal service to its customers, acting as the key gateway for the nation’s exports and imports.”

“Since 1999, JICT has developed from a feeder port into a major shipping hub for the country. This will allow Indonesia to compete with neighbouring ports in the region. With its ability to handle direct calls, cargoes to and from Europe, Asia and Australia no longer need to be transshipped. This means faster distribution, and the elimination of redundant handling charges for Indonesian exporters and importers.”

By the start of February, the six new RTGCs will commence operations at JICT Terminal 1. This latest batch of new equipment provides JICT with a total of 50 RTGCs and 116 terminal tractors.
