New Rail Service Launched at the Port of Felixstowe

07-Feb-2002

A new rail service, operated by GB Railfreight, was launched at the Port of Felixstowe on 6th February 2002.

The new rail service will transport containers for Medite from the Port’s Southern Rail Terminal to/from Selby. Initially, GB Railfreight will operate one train three times a week, transporting 20 wagons capable of carrying three containers each. It then plans to increase the service level to five departures a week with effect from mid-2002.

Richard Pearson, Managing Director of Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited, commented, “We warmly welcome GB Railfreight’s decision to operate the new rail service. Rail volumes currently represent 20% of the Port’s available UK domestic throughput, and we are keen to improve on this figure. This new service increases the range of destinations connected by rail to the Port, and will help boost future rail volumes.”
