The Port of Felixstowe officially opened the first phase of its expansion of Trinity Terminal in mid-2003.

The first phase, which incorporates six hectares of back-up land behind the existing Trinity Terminal, will increase the Port’s storage capacity by 6,500 TEU. A total of 47 hectares of back-up land was reclaimed and levelled during the construction of the Trinity III expansion in 1995-6 and the channel deepening in 1998-2000.

It is expected that a further section of storage area at Trinity Terminal will be opened early next year. The quay is expected to be fully operational by July 2004.

When complete, the Trinity Terminal extension will provide 270 metres of deep-water quay, dredged to 15 metres alongside, able to handle the latest generation of container ships simultaneously. This additional quay will extend the deep-water berths on Trinity Terminal to 900 metres.

Richard Pearson, Managing Director of Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited, owners of the Port of Felixstowe, commented:
