As part of its continuing efforts to improve safety, the Port of Felixstowe has revised its ‘Safety Instructions for Hauliers’ leaflet. The new document outlines essential “dos and don’ts” to ensure optimum safety around the Port.

The leaflet emphasises that the UK Road Traffic Acts are still in force on the Port, enforced by the Port’s own Police Force, and that hauliers must abide by the laws as if on normal highways. In addition, instructions on remaining inside the cab, keeping to the 20 mph speed limit, and not driving under suspended loads are made paramount. The necessity of wearing high visibility clothing, being fully aware of working cranes, and abiding by road markings, are also some of the points highlighted.

The leaflets will be available from the Drivers Receptions, and also from the gatehouses at Trinity, Dooley and Landguard Terminals. They are also to be distributed to all known hauliers who operate in Felixstowe, and by the Road Haulage Association.

Chris Lewis, Chief Operating Officer of the Port of Felixstowe, commented:

“The Port of Felixstowe is the largest container port in the UK. It is the direct employer of 2,800 staff, and on an average day we service around 4,000 lorries. Added to this, there are large numbers of other vehicles travelling around the Port, making it a very busy place. We have a duty to our employees and all users of this Port to make it as safe a place as possible to work or visit.”

The Port is keen to promote best safety practices, and is committed to sustaining its high standard of safety levels, highlighted by the British Safety Council’s Five-Star Award presented to the Port in February.
