17-Jul-2003

[17 July 2003, SHENZHEN] Today, six Rubber-Tyred Gantry Cranes (RTGCs), the first batch of equipment for the Phase III Project, were unloaded at Yantian International Container Terminals (YICT). With their arrival, the countdown has begun as the first berth of the project is expected to be operational on 1 November 2003.

This shipment is part of an order which includes 10 quay cranes and 27 RTGCs. The equipment for the project will be received by YICT in a series of four deliveries within the year.

Meanwhile, the civil engineering construction works are currently well underway. The first two berths have entered their final stage. The dredging project of the first berth has been completed. Supporting the quay operations, yard and ground improvement projects are also under construction.

In addition, the Mingzhu Interchange and Yanba Highway, supporting the traffic flow of the port, are progressing well. The second berth will be operational in the fourth quarter, and an additional two berths are due for completion by the end of 2004.

Occupying an area of 90 hectares, the Phase III Project includes four 100,000-ton-plus berths and all the necessary supporting facilities, representing a total investment of HK$ 6.6 billion. Meeting the soaring growth of trade in the Pearl River Delta, the completed project will not only substantially improve YICT’s handling capacity, but also promote the position of Shenzhen Port in the economic development in Southern China and the international shipping industry.
