A ceremony will be held today (Wednesday 14 August) at Harwich International Port to celebrate the official opening of the new Harwich Port Entrance Road, which will provide a bypass to Parkeston village.

The Port has worked in partnership with Essex County Council to build the new road in less than four months, at a cost of GBP1 million. The road provides relief to the residents of Parkeston, as passengers and freight travelling to the Port no longer need to travel through the village.

The road was completed weeks ahead of schedule, and was opened to users on the 18th July.

Peter Morton, Chief Operating Officer of Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited, owner of Harwich International Port, and Councillor Anthony Peel, Chairman of Essex County Council, will officially open the road with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Andrew Harston, General Manager of Harwich International Port, commented:

“We are delighted that the new road has been completed in such a short space of time, and would like to thank all those who have worked so hard to make this possible. This new direct link with the A120 will significantly improve road connections to the Port, and will enhance the Port’s attractiveness to both business and leisure users.”

Councillor Ron Williams, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation at Essex County Council, said:

“I would like to thank all those who have been involved with this project. The project has been an excellent example of partnership working and the new road will provide great relief to the people of Parkeston and also help businesses and passengers by directly linking the A120 with Harwich International Port.”
